Shuoyuan Bai is a studio jeweler whose work focuses on creating one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by culture and tradition. He graduated from Pratt Institute with his undergraduate degree and later received his M.F.A. in jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design. Bai’s work is shown in various exhibitions across many countries and featured in publications such as Ornament and Metalsmith magazine. Susan Barth has professional training in jewelry making and design that spans back over the last thirty years. In the start of her career she apprenticed for five years at a jewelry firm in New York City that often produced pieces for Tiffany's, after which she went to work for Barry Kieselstein-Cord, a well known New York jewelry designer and stayed for six years working on the creation of new collections. It was at the end of this time, that she switched to freelancing, making original models for designers, which allowed her the time and flexibility to begin the development of her own work. A few years later Susan launched the Susan Barth Design collection which brought her an award at the Baltimore Craft Show.

David Butler's work has been included in several exhibits, including The Art of Gold, a traveling exhibit showing at many venues, including The Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California and The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. New Steel, National Ornamental Museum, Memphis, TN Memories of New York, Aaron Faber Gallery NYC and a recent show of his work in White Plains at Westchester Center for the Arts. David teaches undergraduate jewelry design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and 92nd Street Y. He has taught different workshops at other institutions, including Penland School in 2008 and Arrowmont in 2009. Besides teaching and making jewelry and sculpture, Butler has also worked with other designers, collaborating to bring ideas to fruition, including Donna Karan, 2006, 2007 and Leila Tai, 2009, 2010. He is also involved with museum exhibition design and installation, including the well received, reviewed and recently closed Lost World of Old Europe, an exhibit of ceramic and metal objects from the Danube Valley from 7,000 years ago held at the NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World: www.nyu.edu/isaw. David has worked with the Folk Art Museum on several occasions, including work on the Approaching Abstraction exhibit. Other museums he has worked with include the Guggenheim, The New York Historical Society and The Bard Center for Graduate Studies.

Marsha Davis is a professional jewelry instructor with over 20 years of experience teaching beaded jewelry — ranging from pearl knotting and stringing, to seed beadwork, to macramé, crochet, wirework and weaving. She has been on the faculty of The 92nd Street Y, New York’s Jewelry Center since 2000, teaching 4 classes weekly, and previously at The Craft Students League. Ms Davis has also taught workshops for The American Craft Museum, Museum of Art and Design, The American Museum of Natural History, Newark Museum Arts Workshop, The Bead Society of Greater New York, and bead stores in the NYC area. She has had one of her designs published in The Art of Beaded Beads (2006) Lark Books.

Borislav Goynatsky graduated from Moscow University of Chemical Technology majoring in engineering and minoring in industrial design. After 10 years of designing industrial equipment, decided to enter a field of jewelry. Goynatsky took classes at FIT and worked for jewelry houses like Stephen Dweck, Seaman Shepps, Deirdre Featherstone, Marilyn Cooperman, prior to starting his own company BG Art, Inc. Valerie Hall has worked with metals and precious stones for many years, but over the last 10 years she has worked with polymer clay and finds it to be another fascinating medium in making jewelry. Donna Herman is a native New Yorker and has been making jewelry since she was a child. She started with stringing beads, moved on to children’s ceramic jewelry kilns (no longer available for sale!) and got serious while working as a CFO in the early 2000’s. She started by taking beading classes at jewelry stores and quickly found the 92NY Jewelry Program. She started taking beading classes with Marsha Davis, then wire working classes. She then moved into learning how to make silver jewelry by taking Jewelry I three times! When she took her first Precious Metal Clay course at 92NY after retiring from the business world, she found her bliss. While not abandoning her other jewelry-making pursuits, she began studying silver clay in earnest. She is certified as an Instructor in both Art Clay and PMC. She has studied with notable silver clay artists such as Lis-el Crowley, co-founder of AMCAW, of which she is also a member. As well as Pat Lillie at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts, Cathy Flesher who is a presenter and teacher at this year’s MCAS conference in August 2023 at the Sawtooth School of the Arts, Lyle Rayfield, Donna Lewis, and Katie Baum, the owner of Art Clay World. She is also a member of the International Polymer Clay Association. Donna loves to teach – both children and adults – and loves to combine many disciplines. She is now experimenting with combining silver clay with polymer clay.

Deborah Meyers is a goldsmith and studio jeweler based in New York City specializing in luxurious artisanal jewelry. Her fascination with gold and gems began as a child with the family lore about Grandma Belle’s Van Cleef & Arpels’ “Umbrella” ring. Exposure to influential designers such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Bill Blass, among others, helped to hone her personal sense of style and fuel her fire for true craftsmanship at a young age.

Deborah’s education spans across multiple mediums from The Drama Studio in London to a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Hunter College in New York, and a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School. Additionally, she’s studied with a few Master Jewelers, most notably Cecelia Bauer for ancient goldsmithing techniques and Chie Teratani and Bianca Lopez for wax carving. Her education, along with her artistic studies and training, have made her one of the more philosophical goldsmiths working today. In 2019, she was featured in Forbes Magazine for her work using ethically sourced Canadian diamonds, sustainably mined Brazilian tourmalines and other gemstones she uses to great artistic effect.

In the early 1980s Mahmoud Muhawish while working for Sheikh Nasser al Sabah, a member of Kuwait’s ruling family, Mahmoud was introduced to master goldsmith Claire Bersani who was working on a collection of exceptional jewels. Under her tutelage, Mahmoud began his exposure to and formal training in classical jewelry techniques in Art Museum School at Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah, Kuwait.

In 1985, Mahmoud moved to New York City to further his education in ancient jewelry techniques by studying with Bob Kulicke, the founder of Jewelry Arts Institute and by taking modern technique classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After this period of intensive study Mahmoud was hired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to work in their Objects Reproduction department. Many of the pieces he reproduced remain on sale in the museum gift shop to this day.

Mahmoud has become a world class restorer of ancient jewelry and antiquities in various metals. Objects that he has restored are on view at various galleries and museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Mahmoud is a respected jeweler whose original designs are influenced by his rich cultural traditions and endowed with natural and organic elements. He is a modern artist goldsmith, absorbing, assimilating, and interpreting from the ancient world to the new in his personal vision. He is devoted to sharing his knowledge and encouraging creativity in historical and modern techniques.

Ann Paly is a professional jeweler with over 20 years experience. She works and resides in NYC and has a diverse and loyal following. She received a BFA from SUNY at Buffalo in Fine Arts and Elementary Education and honed her metalsmithing techniques at the 92nd Street Y, Studio Jewelers, Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design and Pratt. Ann began her career as an art director at several major advertising agencies before discovering her passion for jewelry making and design.

Alex Tapnio is a university professional and artist with over two decades of experience in arts and lifelong learning programs. Alex’s art across metals, enamels, ceramics, lithography, and etching explores portraiture as well as art historical -‘isms’ through painting techniques in traditionally mechanical processes. Currently, he serves as the lead alumni officer at The New School, Parsons School of Design, where he oversees a global portfolio of community programs and networking initiatives at iconic events and spaces like the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Art Basel Miami, Shanghai Fashion Week, and SXSW. After earning art degrees from Indiana University and NYU, Alex focused his career in support of talented teen prodigies and arts audience development at prestigious intuitions like Columbia University, Cooper Union, Time Warner, Scholastic, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the U.S. National Gallery of Art. He’s thrilled to join the faculty of 92NY to further discover and nurture new voices and curious learners!

Katharine Wood received her BA from Boston University. She has taught at the Newark Museum, Craft Students League, Museum of Arts and Design, and Princeton University. Her work has been published in Metalsmith and Glass on Metal magazines. Ms. Wood was the featured artist in the publications The Art of Fine Enameling, and Enameling with Professionals. She is the co-creator of internationally used transfer etching technique for enamelists, metalsmiths, and jewelers and continues to exhibit nationally and internationally. Katharine's work is included in the permanent collections of the MFA (Boston), Racine Museum, Newark Museum, Cooper Hewitt and The Enamel Arts Foundation (CA).
