The Big Idea
Inspired by this year’s 400th anniversary Shakespeare celebrations, #wordswelivein explores the words we encounter every day and the stories they tell about our lives and communities. The initiative comes to life through live events, social media and original text-and-image works by writers from around the world and emerging voices from Poetry Society of America, Poets House, The Poetry Project, Kundiman, Canto Mundo and 92Y’s Discovery Contest.

How to Participate
Share the words that shape your world

  1. Post a photo of a word or phrase that represents your neighborhood, local life in a place you’re visiting, or simply speaks to you. Use the hashtag #wordswelivein, tag your location and note why the photo is meaningful to you. Each day, 92Y will select a handful of posts to feature on our website and partner sites.
  2. Create an original photo-essay about your local neighborhood or a place you’re visiting, including images of words that mark the streets. Submit it to 92Y (yourwords@92y.org) for a chance to see your work featured on #wordswelivein and partner sites.
  3. Host an event — a reading, conversation or literary event. Organize an “Instawalk” in your neighborhood to explore the words that mark your streets and what they mean to your community. Use the hashtag #wordswelivein to live tweet your event and share photos. Tag @92Y and we’ll retweet you.*
* By posting a photo with the hashtag #wordswelivein, you give 92Y permission to feature your photo on 92Y’s website, as well as websites of organizations partnering on the #wordswelivein project.
#wordswelivein is supported by a generous gift from Eva Colin Usdan and John Usdan.

Please note that all 92Y regularly scheduled in-person programs are suspended.
