Introduction to Gymnastics: 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-16 years

Introduction to Gymnastics is a Beginner-only gymnastics class. This program is designed for the child who has never participated in gymnastics before or has minimal experience or would like to improve their confidence in gymnastics basics before moving onto a Level 1 (intermediate) class. Progressions and focus include rolls, handstands, gymnastics body positions (ie. table, bridge, split, front support on bars, etc.), introduction to dance and jumps, and basic rules and techniques in the sport of gymnastics.

Level 1 (Intermediate) Recreational: 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-16 years

Level 1 is the next step after a Introduction to Gymnastics (Beginner) gymnastics class at 92Y. To enter a Level 1 class it is required that the child has had experience in at least one gymnastics class previously. Level 1 builds upon and advances what is taught in our Introduction to Gymnastics class, such as cartwheels, bridges, handstands, front supports, casts, chin-up holds vault and beam progressions. Presentation skills and proper gymnastics technique is more emphasized in Level 1. Pre-requisites for this class are a forward roll, backward roll, bridge and completion of an Introduction to Gymnastics class (or email us for an evaluation).

Level 2 (Advanced) Recreational: 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-16 years

Level 2 is the next recreational class following completion of skill requirements in a Level 1 gymnastics class. At the Level 2 skill development phase, your child may be ready to try-out for a Team Tracking Program or the 92Y GymStars Pre-Competitive Team. Please email us for more details. This class builds upon skills developed in Level 1. Skills developed in Level 2 will be pull-over, higher casting, back hip circles, back walk-overs, round-offs, beginning the progressions for flight-based tumbling and more advanced beam and vault progressions. Pre-requisites for this class are a pull-over on bars with a block, front support with straight arms, round-off and a bridge kick-over with a spot.

Starbrights Advanced 1.5-Hour Training

Starbrights is an advanced 1.5 hour class which can be taken once, twice or three times per week. We highly recommend attending this program at least twice per week. Starbrights is the next step from a Level 2 Advanced recreational class or is meant for serious athletes that do not want to join the competitive Xcel or Junior Olympic programs. Skills developed in Starbrights will be back and front tumbling, aerials, development of mini-routines, cast back hip circle, squat-ons, dismounts, kip drills/kips, more advanced progressions on vault (handstand flat-back) and beam. Pre-requisites for this class are a back walk-over/front walk-over, round-off, handstand, pull-over from the floor with no spot, cast with straight arms, side handstand dismount on beam.

Shooting Stars Junior Olympic Pre-Team Prep: 4-6 years

Shooting Stars is a two-day team tracking program designed for talented and dedicated gymnasts’ who are interested in learning more and preparing for the 92Y GymStars Junior Olympic Pre-Team. We do required an evaluation for this program; please contact Shay for a quick evaluation. Coaches instructing this course have also been trained to coach at the competitive level and they bring their competitive training expertise into this class to best prepare students for the pre-competitive team experience. The focus of this class is on technique and quality of skill development, similar to the competitive team style of training. Everyday there will be skill progression, shaping, conditioning, and learning the fundamentals of all four competitive events. Shooting Stars students are highly encouraged to attend Fantastic Gymnastics Camp in the summer to continue their training.
